I was headed to Culvers, on my way to the movies with my Lady. Sams Taco is hidden behind that and not visible (at least to me for the past 2 1/2 years Sam said hes been there), so I decided I might as well try this place since it was new to me. The greeting there was very nice, from Sam himself, he introduced him self and asked if I had been there before. Ect. Gladly explained the menu since we were new, and seemed like a very nice and friendly guy not only to me, but the other people in the joint. To start, just like most other people had said, the chips and salsa are great. If he had a jar of that stuff by the register I would have bought it. We were in a rush though, so I didn't even ask if I could purchase any. I ordered just Taco's, and my Lady Chicken Nachos. I loved my meal, the taco's had a made from scratch flour shell which you don't get everywhere, and it tasted great. The beans were good, and the rice was alright. My lady however, didn't find her meal as great. Claiming there was a weird taste to her dish for some reason. She still ate it though. 4/5 Stars not because of my Lady ( personally I think she was just in a mood) but because of the no refills option. I would still have got glass pop ( I prefer it) but the fact that there was no option for it at the time was silly to me.

Food was fine, BUT service very slow even though only 3 other tables had patrons. Worst was that it was filthy! Ladies bathroom had toilet paper barely & parts of dispenser on the floor. No handtowels at all. Kitchen looked like a mess with dirty plates everywhere and food stuff on prep area. Floor filthy so that my shoes stuck to it. It was also cold inside & not an inviting atmosphere.

Had to post an update on this place. We loved Sam's Tacos so much the first time, my wife and I decided to visit again, travelling a half hour each way just for lunch here. All the (minor) things that I had complaints for last time had been fixed: restaurant temperature was comfortable, chips were not cold this time, we got plates with our nachos, and the server let me know about the extra $1 charge to have my chili rellenos dipped. Great job guys! The food was just as good as the first time we ate here. Outstanding, authentic Mexican food in West Michigan that rivals even some of the best we had back in Chicago. Hell yes. We shall return!

The worst experience ever. I lived in Chicago my whole life and recently moved to grand Haven. Thought I give this place a shot. Worst decision ever. They charge for the to go containers. I waited 30 minutes for my food. They lady wouldn't tell me why she was charging me for misc items. Until I demanded her to. I don't see how people like there nasty food.

Best steak torta around!!! I honestly can't vouch for anything else on the menu since I get the torta every time but it's the best one I've ever had.

The Chili Rellenos are my favorite! Homemade fresh ingredients & amazing salsas. Family owned and operated warm and welcoming. Priced just right. While you're there you will be amazed at how many people spend money on crap food Jimmy John's & Culvers next door.

Just left this place and unhappy with overall service. We sat down and pre-ordered a kids quesadilla dish for our 2-year old son, horchata milk, and chips with guacamole. The lady said they were out of guacamole so we ordered the bean dip. We put in our dinner order. We waited... We waited.... A large group of 2 families with kids came in. 45 minutes passed... No horchata, no bean dip, and no kids quesadilla. It was obvious that this restaurant was being currently managed by two very young girls. We asked for more chips to be patient until anything was served. The chips never came out and the order for the 2 families came out before ours did! As a matter of fact, one of the kids at the larger table received the same order that we ordered for our son. We left and told the server we couldn't wait any longer. This restaurant has very poor management and we are not coming back. I feel bad for those two girls manning this restaurant on a Friday on a Labor Day Weekend. They were overwhelmed with no support.

First and foremost you should not have to pay extra for another basket of chips, especially for a party if 5. That being said have been there 2 times and both times the food was not horrible. But also both times were on the weekend during lunch time and we were the only ones in there. So something is not quite right or other people would be eating there.

A couple of months ago, I made my first visit to Sam's and it was a treat! The owner was so warm and welcoming, asked me questions about what spice level I liked and made some recommendations. First, the fish taco with the corn tortilla was outstanding. I ordered it "deluxe". It was wonderfully seasoned , I don't know in what, but it was not deep fried like many fish tacos are, and it was bursting with flavor. The guac is home made, super fresh and the portion is generous. The chips are pretty good and the salsas were good too. There was a mild tomatillo and a spicy tomatillo based salsa that I loved. This place is a little gem in GH!

After reading all of the other Yelp reviews I decided to give this place a try as it had five out of six favorable reviews, and it's the only "Authentic Mexican" restaurant in Grand Haven that I'm aware of. Well, after my experience (and my girlfriend's) at Sam's Tacos, I really had to ask myself how this place received so many favorable reviews? After dining here, I found myself siding with Tom B's review and here's why: When we arrived we were greeted by the owner, who is indeed a very nice and relatively talkative individual. He touted the fact that all of his entrees are made fresh and from scratch and that you won't find "Authentic Mexican" anywhere else. "Fair enough", I thought..."let's see what you got". The first thing we tried was the chips and salsa as they were promptly brought to the table as soon as we were seated. As I ate them I found myself being fairly disappointed by the flavor of the salsa; Thomas B said it best in his review, "the salsa was served in a one ounce mini-dish and tasted like Prego spaghetti sauce". Extra chips are extra as well. But it was fresh, so I'll give them that. The drinks here are are served one bottle or a can a time and there are NO free refills. Yes, all of the Coke and other soda products are the "Mexican Version" of the brand and I can appreciate trying to keep everything as "authentic" as possible, but limiting your customers to have to pay by the bottle/can might not be the way to go. The entrees that we ordered were the Enchilada and Taco platters. Both meals were probably the most bland entrees we've ever had. The only way I could think of explaining the flavor would be "lifeless". I found myself coating my food one of the four varieties of mild and hot sauces that are also made "fresh and in-house" as that helped me look past the lack of flavor in my food. All-in-all, this place did have some good qualities about it, but in the long run all I have to say is that the proof is in the pudding or the salsa in this case.

I'm sorry Grand Haven, but this place is not a very good experience. The owner might be a great person, I don't know as I didn't meet him/her. But the salsa was served in a one ounce mini-dish and tasted like Prego spaghetti sauce. Too much oregano for Mexican taste, IMHO. When our table of 4 asked for another basket of chips we were informed that would be an extra charge. If we had known that, we may have sat at four separate tables :) It's just such a bad business practice to nickel and dime the customers on chips. The lunches are $8 to $10 and at that price they are about two bucks more than they are worth. This place will be lucky to be open in the summer of 2012. We were looking longingly at the line out the door at Jimmy John's across the parking lot and regretting our decision to eschew the line and eat at Sam's Tacos. I hate restaurants that feel the need to have flat screen televisions. If I wanted to watch TV I would have stayed at home. I love authentic Mexican food, and this food was OK, but not great. In my recollection they don't stuff "wet" burritos with shredded iceberg lettuce south of the border.

We have eaten at Sam's Tacos (located next to Culvers) a half a dozen times and each time was very impressed with the delicious food and the attention paid to us by the owner. He is very friendly and each time has brought us free little samples of things he wanted us to try. I absolutely love the chorizo Sopas and the chili relleno burrito. Delicious!

Good burrito = better than Rios like Brian says. Not the same as Tip-A-Few but the Tip isn't exactly authentic. Kind of cool to have Mexican Coke in a bottle to go along with it. My daughter had the chips and cheese but the cheese wasn't melted on top, it was served in a dish to dip in. Not sure if it is a Cheez Whiz kind of thing but it was pretty good, regardless. Portions are pretty big and we'll be back to try something else on the menu.

Very tasty authentic Mexican food. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are large. I had the chile relleno burrito, dry and it was delicious. Hubby had the chorizo burrito - also good. We have also had the fajitas and liked them a lot. Kids meals are nice sized and come with rice and beans. My kids LOVE to go to the cooler and select their bottled pop. This is a nice place for families with ample seating and a friendly owner/staff. There is no alcohol served.

Authentic Mexican food at its best. I love this place. The owner is very friendly and everything is made from scratch. I have tried the tacos, wet burrito, chips and salsa. I also tried the breakfast--which is served all day; I had the steak and eggs. I will go back again and again.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
